A New Year
I usually don't celebrate the New Year with the gusto of revelers in Times Square. It always seems a bit contrived to me. I realize the New Year is an easy marker of time and that we, as humans ,need a way to mark the seasons of our life but I never felt the urge to do so while wearing oversized novelty glasses. I'm also not much on making New Year's resolutions, but this past week Pastor Thomas Anderson got me thinking, specifically about "reflecting Christ." His is apt council not only for each of us personally, but for our congregation as a whole. As we enter 2016, there will be new beginnings for our congregation. The Call Committee will begin their work in the next few weeks and I am optimistic about what that means for Salem. While it may be many months before we have a new pastor, I am confident that we will find the right person to minister to and lead Salem forward. But how does "reflecting Christ" fit into our time of transition? Back when Steph and I were searching for a church, a couple members of Salem reflected Christ to us and invited us to a Sunday service. On Sunday morning, as we listened to a slightly peculiar pastor compare Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem on a donkey to a ride into Sturgis on a Vespa, we sat quietly not knowing any of the parishioners around us. After the service, Rodney came up to Steph and me and welcomed us whole-heartedly to Salem. We knew we found our home. In the years since, I have seen this reflection of Christ on countless occasions and it is this spirit that makes Salem so special. I ask that as we move through 2016, we all try to take Pastor Anderson's words to heart and reflect Christ to the new faces among us, to prospective pastors, and most of all, to each other. The transition team has completed the congregational profile, and we are now ready to officially begin the call process. The call committee has had their first meeting, and we are on our way to acquiring a new pastor!
Don't forget to attend the annual meeting on the 24th of January. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. There will be a pot luck beforehand. |
